Fletcher Free Screening: The Right to Read

The  Fletcher Free Library is collaborating with the Stern Center for Language and Learning and the Vermont International Film Festival (VTIFF) to provide a free screening of the film The Right to Read.

The screening will be held on Saturday, May 18th at 4pm at VTIFF's Screening Room, 60 Lake Street, 1st Floor.  The film will be followed by a panel discussion with local educators.

The Right to Read explores America's low rate of reading proficiency among children and adults.  The Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program's 2023 testing scores for English Language Arts were below 60% for all grades 3-9.

The film follows the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two families who are working to ensure the next generation has the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.  The film is directed by Jenny Mackenzie with Executive Producer, LeVar Burton.

Film screening followed by a panel discussion on the film with Peggy Price, M.Ed., F/OGA and Dr. Laurie Quinn of the Stern Center for Language and Learning; Amy Blauvelt, librarian, MTSS coordinator, and a language arts tutor at Frederick H Tuttle Middle School, Kara Quinn, Edmunds Elementary School teacher, and Megan Butterfield, Youth Librarian, Fletcher Free Library.

I hope you will have time to join us for this important film and discussion.  Seating is limited, please register here.
